Herps Part II


The bullfrog was a great catch, but the real treat of the amphibian field trip for me was the Long tail Salamanders (Eurycea longicauda). This one was spotted on the wall of an old spring house surrounded by woods.  The tail may be up to two-thirds of the total length of the salamander. They reach lengths around 6 inches.

As a kid, I spent many hours in the creeks and spring houses of south western West Virginia hunting for just such creatures.  Beautiful animals…

    Wow, this is amazing! When I was kid, I only played with ants, snails, dragonflies, ladybugs…etc. I am jealous your environment!

    I like the animal’s color.
