You’re never too old to learn something new. I was struggling with the Thursday New York Times crossword early this morning. I got a troublesome word by getting the crossing words, producing a word I never heard of. But that’s why God gave us Google.
Ghoti is a constructed word from the late 1800’s designed to emphasize the irregularities in English spelling. Take the gh you find in cough (f), the o you find in women (i), and the ti found in nation (sh), and you get ‘fish’.
