That’s Rare


This is something I’ve only seen once before in Delaware.  It’s a Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus).  It’s a crow-sized bird and close relative of the somewhat mythical Ivory-billed woodpecker.  It makes a tremendous drumming when it’s doing its’ thing, which is how I was able to spot it.  Not a very good picture, but not bad for an animal that’s so skittish.
